On Les Misérables and Old Dreams

I watched this breathtaking Oscar winner a month ago and must say that now I am quite outraged it didn't win Best Film. I haven't seen Argo yet but I have no doubt that this musical is the best movie of 2012.

Cooking in Heels: Revenge of the Vegan Cupcakes

I know that with my Cooking in Heels posts I've successfully convinced all of you that I am a decent cook (and made you slightly hungry) but the truth is this: I'm pretty crap at cooking. Fortunately, I have an Italian boyfriend and Italian men are generally either worthless cooks or kitchen magicians. Very fortunately for me, David is the second. So, to put it simply, I haven't had to cook for five and a half years. I know, I should thank the heavens every day for my luck - and believe me I do - but the problem is, I was born and raised a dessert fanatic. And guess what's the one thing David' can't cook? That's right.

Since I went vegan, getting my sugar fix on has been more than a little challenging. Most vegan bakeries in London (there are more than a few, actually!) only cater to larger, "I'm having a party and I need 200 cupcakes" needs, kind of like 2 Broke Girls. So it's not like you can take an afternoon stroll to one of these places and just sit there and enjoy a (soy) cappuccino and a luscious pastry. Except for Cookies and Scream at Camden market, there are not many choices for sweet-toothed compassionistas.

So what's a vegan girl to do? Bake, baby!

Oscars 2013: We Are All Jennifer Lawrence

I tried to watch the Oscars last night, but apparently the viewing, live or otherwise, is reserved for US residents ONLY. If I have ever heard of a stupid, elitist thing that aside from being stupid and elitist is also completely unnecessary, this is it. But that's not what this post is about. I wanted to watch because I wanted to do a post about the Oscars. Every year, the Oscars make me remember how as a little girl I wanted to be an actress, so today I wanted to write something that brought a different light to that.

I could write about my childhood crush, Ben Affleck, winning an Oscar. I could write about vegan Anne Hathaway winning one. I could write about not liking Anne's dress at all.  I could say something about something else I don't like, such as Tarantino movies. I could ponder how jealous my nine-year-old self would have been of Quvenzhane Wallis. I could also write about how truly and utterly awesome it is that Adele won an Oscar.

But I won't. I'll write about Jennifer Lawrence.

Sunday Inspiration: The Playlist

First of all I apologize for having left you guys without your C&H fix since Thursday (yes, I know the abstinence must be absolutely horrible. But you know what they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder!). The thing is, on Friday night my computer cable just decided it was time to call it quits. Fortunately, David is a DIY wiz and by this afternoon he managed to get things back on track. But anyway, I'm sorry.

So I was going through some pictures to create my Sunday Inspiration list and I just felt so very uninspired looking at all those Fashion Week photos of girls in high heels carrying £2000 bags made out of dead animals. Or am I just jealous that I wasn't invited to Fashion Week? If there's one thing that truly annoys me this time of year, it's all these glamorous women complaining about how "stressful" Fashion Week is. You know, dashing off in a cab from one show to another, wearing heels all day (even in snow, shock, horror! Get over yourselves: some of us come from Sweden and wear four-inch heels in three inches of snow and ice like nobody's business five months a year. And besides, you know, you could just wear biker boots. I promise, Anna Wintour will not run after you and bite you in the leg. How do I know? I've actually worn flats to Milan Fashion Week.) and then of course there's the hassle of having to fly from New York to London and then to Milan and Paris. Oh, the stress! Oh, the stress-induced wrinkles! Oh, the unbearable horror of it all! I say, try not being invited and see how you like it. And also: eat a (vegan) cupcake. You can't handle the stress because you don't get enough carbs.

How NOT to Approach Bloggers: A Guide for Companies

I am far from what you'd call a famous or successful blogger, at least  if you measure success in money, gifts, press attention and lucrative brand collaborations (I am, however, a very successful blogger if you measure success in how many cool people I meet through blogging. But that's a different post.). Even so, I've been propositioned with some pretty out-there stuff from companies that seem like they don't really know what's going on. Which started me thinking about what the more influential bloggers must be facing every time they open their inbox.

So I thought I'd put together a little guide for the companies on how to NOT approach bloggers. Note to brands: if you catch yourself doing one of these things, change your approach or don't be surprised if I don't reply. You can thank me in the letter that comes with my free Stella bag, thank you very much.

Grunge

Those of you who follow me probably know all about my love affair with all things 90s and grunge. Since today is Kurt Cobain's birthday (he would have been 46 today) I wanted to talk about how this decade influenced my life and style today.

Zen-spiration

I've fallen in love. Head over heels and sometimes heels over head. And over shoulders....my new love is yoga.

I've been practicing yoga on and off for a couple of years and always felt like I wanted to explore it more.  A couple of weeks ago I discovered RachelBrathen.com, the website and Instagram of the coolest chick alive - the girl pulling off the impossible pose in the above photo. Rachel, who's Swedish like me, inspired me to get back in touch with yoga. And it made sense.

Here We Go Again: Blog Awards

Yesterday the lovely Catherine from Buying Cruelty Free nominated me for a Liebster Blog award and Leyla at Only a Storm in a Coffee Cup nominated me for a Versatile Blogger award - I love these things because I always find lots of fun new blogs to follow and I get to answer questions about myself.

Here's how it works:

It’s like a chain of letters, with a difference : we share blogs that we love!

But it doesn’t mean there’s no rules!

Here they are :

1- Once nominated, you have to publish about it on your blog & of course, thank the person who named you by linking to his or her blog.

2- In your post, you have to tell us 11 facts about you.

3- You’ll also have to answer the 11 questions the person who nammed you left on his or her blog.

4- Choose 11 other bloggers with under 200 followers to nominate (not the person who nominated you), link to their blog and make sure you let them know they are nominated.

5- Choose 11 questions you want to be answered

6- The new nominees have to do the same, so the chain goes on!

Let’s begin!

Sunday Inspiration: 17 February

After the trips to Stockholm and Milan, my best friend coming over, and Valentine's Day, it was time for a calmer, more luxurious pamper-me weekend. Yesterday I went to get my hair done (just a trim, no major changes) and today I'm going to yoga at Embody Wellness here in London and then David and I are giving cupcake-making another try! Hope you're all having a lovely weekend.

The Luckiest Girlfriend in the World

I'm happy for the girls who got a diamond ring for Valentine's Day. Maybe even with matching earrings.

I'm happy for the girls who are unwrapping a Chanel bag with unbridled excitement at this very moment.

I'm happy for the girls who found a ticket to Paris under their pillow yesterday morning.

I'm happy for the girls who were picked up in a limo, taken shopping and wined and dined at fancy restaurants.

But me? I don't need any of that.

Because diamonds come and go, earrings get lost and a bag is just a bag.

But every time I see my present, a drawing of me playing David's Ibanez, I can't help but smile sheepishly like an idiot. The fact that he's an amazing artist just makes it even more unbelievable and incredible that he chose ME.
We dream of many things, but I never dared believe that I'd be this lucky.

Valentine's Day Mix Tape

I'm a big fan of Valentine's Day, but that wasn't always the case.

I had never celebrated it, with or without a boyfriend, before I met my fiancé. Pre-David V-Days were spent pinig away after that drummer boy in high school (yes, I've always had a thing for musicians), wishing my ex would call me or just, you know, being a happy single girl.

But when David and I met, all of a sudden it felt nice to have a day to celebrate love. I just think that's such a beautiful thing to celebrate. Think about it: so many people out there are looking for love. So many songs, movies, books and works of art speak of it. And I've found it. I've had the extraordinary luck to actually find love. So why the heck shouldn't I celebrate it?

And yes, we do need "a special day" when we're allowed to celebrate love. A day when all the cold-hearted cynics out there get to hide away and leave the streets free to be roamed by wild lovers. Because we're all so caught up in the day-to-day bus catching, dish washing, phone ringing, e-mail sending, lunch cooking life that sometimes we forget to take a break and remember that we're darn lucky to have love in our lives. So happy Valentine's to all you romantics out there.

Remixed: We Wore What

How rare is it these days to stumble upon a personal style blogger who actually understands style? I'm crushing on the outfits worn by Danielle Bernstein of We Wore What for her fearless yet classy mixes of beanie hats with stiletto heels, or track pants and piles of rings and bracelets. And her awesome ombré gives me serious hair envy.

S**t (Some) Omnivores Say

Yesterday, at the lunch table at work, I politely said no to some cake a coworker had made because, like many cakes out there, it contained eggs. Another coworker's reaction was, "you're vegan? That's so impressive".

Of course that was lovely to hear (beats "noo, so what DO you eat?"). It started me thinking of all the questions we've all heard, vegan or vegetarian - I know there are several of you nodding as you read this. So I decided to make a little compilation of S**t (Some) Omnivores Say and how to reply to it. I say "some" omnivores because I don't want to blame all omnivores - most of them are lovely. All of my best friends are omnies and I love them and am grateful that they never say these things to me!

Untitled

Fashion month is here and while I should be OMG-ing with the rest of the high-heeled crowd, all I want to do is to crawl under the covers and watch Hart of Dixie. For a week or so.
I've had a lovely weekend with my best friend who's now heading back to Sweden, leaving me to wake up from the haze of happiness that has enveloped me these last two days and be brutally thrown against the grey concrete of real life.

Sunday Inspiration - February 10

I can't write that much today - have to get out into the icy London weather and have a lovely day with my best friend and her boyfriend, who are here for the weekend! Have a lovely Sunday everyone!

Life Lessons From Silver Linings Playbook

THIS POST HAS A LOT OF SPOILERS!!!!!!

So last weekend was a huge movie weekend for me. I watched Les Misérables (this movie struck me in so many ways I never expected. Dug up old memories and dreams that should maybe stay tucked away. However, a post is coming) and Silver Linings Playbook, a movie I couldn't wait to watch as it deals with two very interesting aspects: love and craziness.

Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, both absolutely genius (Brad, who knew you weren't just a hottie? The boy can act! And as for Jen, she completely blew my mind. I've never seen her act before and all I can say is WOW), have this sparkling, fizzy energy between them as Pat the guy who's recently left a mental hospital and Tiffany the young widow who deals with her husband's death by having lots and lots of sex. And dancing.

This movie makes an impact as it's so straightforward and well executed. This is a story that deals with reality, and I don't mean "oh-look-here's-a-fat-naked-girl-with-"curves" reality but actual reality, with feelings and emotions and laughter and tears and love and craziness. That's the strength of it.While observing its greatness with a cup of tea and some dark chocolate, I came to the following conclusions:

Coffee and Heels Goes Out: H&M David Beckham Press Event

Yesterday a work contact invited me to the  press screening of H&M’s new David Beckham ad (directed by Guy Richie)  at London’s super-swanky Soho hotel and, well, I said yes obviously (carpe Diem! Carpe Beckhamem!), hoping that David would be there, catch a glimpse of me and fall head over heels in love. Just kidding, I already have my very own blond thirtysomething David . However, I got my butt out of my work-from-home PJs and into a lace dress and off I trotted.

Vegan Stars I Love

I don't know if Ryan is vegan or vegetarian, but if he is, it's proof that perfection does exist.

I don't know if so many famous people go vegan out of compassion, eco-mindedness, for health reasons or just because it's "in" (is it in? Are we hip? I believe we are!), but I'm happy they're doing it. Anne Hathaway and Natalie Portman's vegan weddings both got lots of attention (and both looked absolutely amazing) and more stars than ever are committing to the plant-based life. A big yay for these celebs (and many others):

Natalie Portman

I love this woman.
Oscar winner, Harvard student, vegan through pregnancy, vegan bride and even had custom-made vegan shoes for her Dior ad. Amazing person and all-round role model.

Sunday Inspiration: February 3

Time for the weekly batch of inspo, fresh out of the oven!

As I expected, the Milan vacation gave me my spark back. Now that I think back about it, feeling a bit down back in January was probably due to tiredness: the last vacation I'd had was literally three days in August -then I packed up and moved to a new country, found a flat, a job, a new life, all while working tirelessly and job hunting. No matter I was exhausted. I just didn't realize it.

But now that I've had my chance to rest, I see all the little and big crazy wonderful things in my life again. And, you know, I'm actually pretty happy.

Could It Be? A Vegan Designer at New York Fashion Week

...yes, really!

The gorgeous girl in the too-adorable-for words photo above is Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart, the genius founder and creative director of Vaute Couture, a kick-ass vegan fashion brand I'd shop at ALL the time if I could afford it. I'm beyond psyched for Leanne to be showing at New York Fashion Week - she's the first all-vegan animal rights designer to show her collection in such a huge, worldwide context, which is an incredible step for vegan fashion.

But I'm sure Leanne won't be the last. This step shows that the world is finally ready for ethical, sustainable, animal-friendly apparel to take its rightful place on the glossy fashion map. 2013 is the year when fashion will grow a heart (to go with its endless legs and shiny hair) and wearing animals will no longer be the only option. Here's to a vegan revolution on the catwalk!

Read more about Leanne and the show (and, if you're from the US, enter to win show tickets!) at The Kind Life.
