Last week when we went to Milan, I met up with a friend I used to volunteer with at the shelter. We decided to head to this new place that just opened close to the area where I lived when I lived in Milan, Navigli, which is a really gorgeous place: around the two artificial rivers, these beautiful streets are filled with little pubs, restaurants and vintage clothing stores...and now, Universo Vegano.
Meaning "vegan universe" (duh), this place is tiny, green and amazing. There are about three or four high tables inside, where you can enjoy one (or two!) of the mouth-watering sandwiches, burgers or wraps that this place has to offer - all 100% vegan.
Deciding what to eat was far from easy - everything looked absolutely fantastic! But in the end, I opted for the kebab - the first one I've ever had. Believe it or not, I had actually never eaten a kebab before in my life! Obviously it was beyond amazing. David went for a classic cheeseburger (with cheese that tasted exactly like Gouda - I swear!) and my friend had a champignon burger that she said was delicious.
Obviously this is a fast-food place. But still, you get the feeling that what you're eating actually has a healthy element to it. And hey, no worrying about the cheese or mayo - all ingredients are vegan. It's amazing that more places like this are popping up around the city. I really got the feeling that veganism was a growing trend in Italy, which used to be such a vegan-unfriendly country, food-wise. It's truly awesome that things are changing.
Universo Vegano's website isn't up and running yet, but if you're headed to Milan, let me know and I'll give you directions - promise.
My favourite part of the lunch? Running into beautiful Maya:
...and feeding her a piece of my kebab!
