Beautiful Creatures

First of all, happy Easter to those of you that are Christian! I'm not religious, but Easter's a big deal here in Italy, so ll be celebrating with lunch at my in-laws' tomorrow. Today, I spent the morning at the dog and cat shelter, which was a wonderful experience as always.

a cute moment with two shelter puppies last weekend. The black puppy was so cuddly. The white one was really shy but still adorable. They've both been adopted now.

Volunteering teaches me new lessons every day. I'm slowly realizing that my real passion in life are animals. I have spent such a great part of my life looking at shoes and bags, writing about fashion shows and flipping through magazines that I forgot that those things are nice, but they're just icing on the cake.

Shelter cat. I couldn't help myself, I had to take a picture.

It's funny how your life priorities change as you grow older. Ten years ago I was eighteen and all I wanted was to move to Los Angeles to be an actress. Back then, all I cared about was "success" - which of course, is more elusive the more you desire it. But I also wanted to experience things, and I did.

Five years ago, I was twenty-two and had just decided acting wasn't for me. I was getting ready to go to fashion school and was so psyched about it. All I could think about was dresses, bags, and brands. I felt like I'd found a new way to express myself and be creative. Back then, I was sure this was a lifelong passion that would become my life's calling.

The white puppy. He was shy, but marvellous nonetheless.

Now that I'm a bit older, I still love the hectic pace of a big city. The high points of my week involve slipping on a sparkly dress and a pair of sky-high (faux-leather) wedges with a cocktail in my hand, but I also love simpler pleasures. There are few things now that boost my mood as much as cuddling with a kitten or going for a walk with a shelter dog. I don't think being around animals is my talent, because I'm honestly not that good at it. I can't ever be sure that I don't get jumped on by that dog at the shelter, and I'm pretty sure that when we finally adopt one of them, if it wasn't for David I'd end up one of those people crying, "I have no idea what to do with him!" on shows like The Dog Whisperer.  David is amazing with animals, especially dogs.

Every single time I'm at the shelter, I think about what's important to me and what isn't, and specifically why what isn't important is still in my life. We get so caught up in superficial "traps" that we end up jaded, forgetting that the simple things make us the happiest. I know I'm a very lucky person in so many ways. But sometimes I can't help wanting more. Or less. Depends on how you see it. The animals have taught me that I, too, can be serene. "Less is more" doesn't just apply to matching a little black sheath with a string of pearls. Sometimes happiness means getting up at eight o'clock on a Saturday morning, putting on a pair of old jeans and running about in the mud with a dog on a leash. Happiness means different things to different people, and I'm redefining what it means to me.

  1. It's so nice to see people writing posts like this :)

My two biggest passions in life (aside form my boyfriend and my wanderlust) are animals and writing.

I get a buzz from writing and being published etc, but nothing compares to my pets. I just love them!

  2. Vilket bra inlägg! Vad glad jag blit att du har hittat ännu en sak du brinner för! Djur är underbara :)

  3. Gli animali sono la cosa per cui vivo. Non potrei essere più d'accordo con il tuo post!!!

  5. What a beautiful way to spend your Easter (and very selfless too). Last time I went to a shelter was 12 years ago and I came home with our three legged dog!I don't trust myself to go in again as I'm sure I'd come away with something.Rx

  8. Karolina do you comment the same thing every time? I have a couple of comments from you that are exactly like this. I doubt that I look "fab" in my old holey jeans, pink sneakers and scraped-back hair, but thanks.

Speak your mind.
