Sex and the City Prequel? No, Thanks!

I have always been a Sex and the City fanatic. The night when I watched my very first episode of the show, I had an epiphany. I realized that I wasn't the only woman out there who wasn't going to jump through burning hoops just to be able to put Mrs next to her name. There were women out there just like me, who didn't view strollers and nappies as their only purpose in life. Sex and the City became my own little revolution, and I loved the idea of four strong, independent women living their life - including love - their own way. The TV show, and later the two movies, gave a voice to young (and not so young) women everywhere.

This is why, when I heard that a prequel was in the plans, my first reaction was excitement. I was one of the fans that loved the first film and the second as well (yes, I loved it and I'm proud of it!), but the idea of a prequel with the storyline of "Carrie and the girls aged 18" starring Hollywod's most sparkly teen actresses actually makes my skin crawl. And it's not just me talking here, believe me.

If you think about the essence of Sex and the City, you're bound realize that it's actually Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda. That means Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon. That does not mean Elizabeth Olsen, Blake Lively, Selena Gomez and Emma Roberts. If this is really what's in the works, I foresee (after a look into my Swarowski-embellished Jimmy Choo crystal ball) a massive protest from the show's die-hard original fans (that's us who know what Carrie's middle name is and remember the total number of Miranda's sex partners) who are outraged at the choice of teen stars to portray those who have become icons of their generation. Sex and the City is not Sex and the City without the original actresses, and copying-and-pasting the money-milking SATC name onto a rosy-pink teen flick is not going to fly with us. Call it Twilight and the City, The Size Zero Sisterhood or whatever makes you cash, but don't call it Sex and the City. Hands off our girls!

  1. Agreed...the idea makes my skin crawl! I don't want to see these girls(who are routinely on in my house via nick and Disney thanks to my kids), playing women who are icons of my generation...no thanks! I also loved the second film!
